History

Wood auger bit with a screw lead and square tang for a hand brace, card no. 4. Overall length 190 mm, mass 45 g. Diameter not measured or confirmed; the digit stamp on the tang was earlier read as "70" or "10". The shank carries a stamp in the form of a shaped shield / elongated oval: a short inscription above, presumably "SCH…NG", below "BO…R" (possibly "BOHRER"), and an illegible figure in the centre.

Dating. Roughly the first half of the 20th century (about 1900–1950s), with wide uncertainty; no specific year or decade is confirmed.

Research status

Attribution is preliminary; the maker and country of manufacture are not established. The upper inscription is only partly legible; the reading "SCHLANGEN" was rejected as not fitting the space on the stamp. The lower inscription may be "BOHRER" (German for "bit"), with partly damaged letters. The central figure (an emblem, a person or an object) is not reliably identified. Marks considered as research leads: Schellenbohrer (August Friedrichs), Bohrer-König (Mühlhoff), and the makers Heller and Schönenstein; none is confirmed by a visual match of the stamp. Confirmed: the form of the tool, length, mass, circumstances of acquisition, conservation. Not confirmed: maker, exact inscription, symbol, diameter, year of manufacture and market value. Bought in Königswinter, Germany, together with a Flott hand brace; the bit was held in its chuck. The card is based on the owner's information and macro photographs of the stamp.
