Research status
The 1890s–1910s dating is a working hypothesis based on the mark and the history of the works; the year of manufacture is not established. The dates in the history of the Pesmes works (1893, 1901, 1904, 1920, 1929) were checked against Mérimée record IA00016549, which describes the building complex, not this pruner. The Manufacture Générale Franc-Comtoise letterhead letter of 4 May 1921 (scan and a screenshot of the post are attached) shows that on that date the firm named the former houses GRAS, JACQUOT, CHRÉTIEN, MATHIEU and G. GÉRARD as its predecessors. The letter has no direct link to this item: it acknowledges payment of an invoice for 255.25 francs, and what was bought is unknown. The letter comes from a Facebook post and has not been independently verified. A link between the mark and Gras-Jacquot-Chrétien is probable, but there is no direct document. The meaning of the “S” mark is not established.
