History

Compact hand auger for wood with an oval-loop, slightly asymmetric handle. The handle is formed by bending a metal rod; at the base two coils around the axis and a protruding free end are visible. The working part is screw / spoon-shaped with a pointed lead. Length 191 mm, mass 73 g. Metal, presumably steel. Drilling diameter not yet measured. No visible marks in the photographs. Number 3 of the Frankfurt group: shorter and lighter than the other two.

Dating. Working hypothesis: late 19th to first half of the 20th century (about 1890–1950s); a stylistic estimate.

Restoration

October 2026: cleaned with 0000 steel wool and WD-40, preserved with ISO VG 68 oil — the same gentle method as for the other two augers from the Frankfurt purchase. No blackening or painting; the dark patina, surface relief and cutting-part geometry are retained.

Research status

Maker, mark, country of manufacture, factory, smith, model and production date are not established; purchase in Germany does not prove the country of manufacture. The construction is described from photographs: the method of making and the number of separate pieces are not proven without inspection and metallography; the absence of a legible mark does not mean there never was one. Open questions: determine the drilling diameter, check both sides of the shank and the working part for faint marks, measure the handle dimensions and shank diameter. Bought at a flea market in Frankfurt am Main in late September 2026; price 1 €. Card dated October 2026.
